I used to believe I was “big-boned” and destined to always be the bigger one in my group of friends. It turns out, that’s not entirely true. While genetics can influence body shape to an extent (for example, I did learn from doing a 23andme DNA test that I am genetically predisposed to being heavier), they certainly don’t control your future. Willpower and dedication aren’t encoded in your DNA; they’re habits that can be cultivated. By consistently practicing healthy habits and exercising your willpower, you can defy your genetic predispositions. Trust me, I’ve been there!
2. Extreme Dieting is Necessary
One of the most common weight loss myths is that you need to follow an extremely restrictive diet to see any real weight loss change. This couldn’t be farther from the truth! Weight loss isn’t about cutting out all joy and flavor from your meals; it’s about making smarter food choices. Yes, the balance of calories matters, but so does the quality of the food you eat. There’s a variety of nutrition plans out there that can help you shed pounds without making yourself miserable.
3. A Fancy Gym Membership is Required
Guess what? I lost over 100 lbs without stepping foot in a gym or hiring a personal trainer. You don’t need high-end gym equipment to lose weight. What you need is determination and a good plan. Simple activities like walking, running, or following along with YouTube workout videos can be super effective. The best tools for weight loss are available at a very low cost; you just need to use them consistently.

Many people think being addicted to sugar means you can never enjoy sweets again. Not true! Overcoming a sugar addiction is challenging, but very possible with the right approach. Moderation is key. You can still have sugars, just opt for healthier ones. During my sugar detox phases, I swap out processed sugars for natural alternatives like fruits, dates, or even sweeteners like coconut sugar, maple syrup, or honey. It satisfies the craving without the negative effects of refined sugar.
